Grant Tigers
Welcome to My Classroom
Welcome to Mrs. Onsager's second grade classroom!
We do many exciting things in second grade! Right now, we are studying comparison and measurement in Science class. The second graders have been working very hard in cooperative groups to measure their heights and lengths of their arms and legs!
In Math, the second graders are learning all about graphs, time, money, addition, and subtraction. We continue to do weekly 5-minute timed tests. I hope that by the end of the year, all students are getting 100 facts correct in 5 minutes! At school, we practice our facts on a computer program called Fastt Math. Ask your child about it! Through games and interactive "focus facts," second graders become masters of the basic addition math facts.
The second graders are working on map skills and communities in Social Studies. They are becoming very good at reading maps!
Guided Reading is in full swing again after the WKCE testing. Students are working in small groups of four or five with a teacher. They have a Ziploc bag with their guided reading books in it. These should be read nightly and the goldenrod sheet signed.
Students are required to take and pass 2 Accelerated Reader tests each week. The books that they check out from the library are at their levels. Picture books should be read 3 times before a test is taken on the book to check comprehension. It's great to hear students excited about reading!
